Rendering of jaw with dental crownIf you have a damaged or weakened tooth, a dental crown can offer the strength and appearance of a healthy, natural tooth. Whether your tooth has been cracked, worn down, or compromised by decay, dental crowns are an ideal solution to prevent further damage and restore your confidence.

Robert J. Malone DDS provides custom-made crowns tailored to your unique smile, giving you a lasting solution that looks and feels natural.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-designed cap that fits over a damaged tooth, restoring its shape, function, and appearance. Crowns not only strengthen the tooth but also protect it from further wear or decay. Made from durable materials, crowns are crafted to blend seamlessly with the rest of your teeth, enhancing both your smile and overall oral health.

Why You Might Need a Dental Crown

You may benefit from a dental crown if you experience any of the following issues:

•  Large Cavities or Tooth Decay - When a filling alone is not enough to restore the tooth, a crown provides added support and longevity.
•  Fractured or Broken Tooth - Crowns can hold a broken tooth together, preventing further damage and pain.
•  After a Root Canal - A crown protects the restored tooth, which is often more fragile following a root canal procedure.
•  Worn Teeth - Teeth that have been worn down due to grinding (bruxism) or erosion can benefit from the strength and protection of a crown.
•  Cosmetic Enhancements - Crowns are also used to enhance the appearance of a misshapen or discolored tooth, restoring symmetry and color to your smile.

Our dental team at Robert J. Malone DDS can assess your specific needs to determine if a crown is the right solution for you. With a variety of crown materials available, we’ll recommend the most suitable type to match your aesthetic and functional preferences.

Types of Dental Crowns

There are several types of dental crowns, each with distinct advantages:

•  Porcelain Crowns - These crowns provide the most natural look and are ideal for front teeth as they match the color and shine of real teeth.

•  Porcelain Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns - These are durable and cost-effective, but may reveal a metal line at the gumline over time.

•  Gold and Metal Crowns - Known for durability, metal crowns are often used on back teeth due to their strength and longevity, though some patients prefer the unique look of gold crowns for front teeth.

•  All-Ceramic and All-Resin Crowns - These options mimic natural teeth well and are a great choice for those seeking a metal-free crown, although they may have limitations in durability compared to metal.

Dental Crowns for Implants and Root Canals

Crowns are also essential in restorative treatments like implants and root canals:
•  Implants - After an implant post has integrated into the jawbone, a crown is placed on top to create a fully functional and natural-looking tooth replacement.
•  Root Canals - Following a root canal, a crown is often recommended to protect the treated tooth from future damage and to restore its strength and appearance.

How Is a Dental Crown Placed?

Getting a crown typically involves two appointments. During your first appointment, our dental team will begin by numbing the area around the affected tooth with local anesthesia. Next, we’ll carefully remove any decay or damaged tissue and shape the tooth into a small nub, creating a solid base to hold the crown in place.

Once the tooth is prepared, we’ll take an impression and send it to a dental lab, where technicians will craft a custom crown that fits perfectly in your mouth. In the meantime, we’ll place a temporary crown to protect the tooth.

At your second visit, we’ll remove the temporary crown and check the fit of your custom crown before cementing it into place. Once secured, your new crown will function like a natural tooth, restoring both strength and appearance to your smile.
