Porcelain Crowns Escondido

Rendering of jaw with porcelain crown from Robert J. Malone DDS in Escondido, CADental crowns are replacement teeth that are cemented onto a tooth or dental implant. Crowns can be made from composite resin, gold, silver, metal alloys, and porcelain. Porcelain is highly used in dentistry for cosmetic and restorative procedures. Porcelain has translucency and brilliance that can help restore your smile's function without sacrificing its glow. Porcelain crowns can be made from all porcelain, or porcelain fused to metal. One of the benefits of porcelain crowns is they can last five to 15 years if they are cared for with disciplined oral hygiene practices.

Porcelain crowns are one of the many restorative and cosmetic dental treatments we offer at Robert J. Malone DDS. If you are considering dental caps in Escondido for a root canal or dental implant, our dentist can discuss this procedure and its many alternatives.

Conditions of porcelain crowns

Porcelain is a translucent and durable material. Crowns that are well cared for can last up to 15 years. Porcelain's translucency and color are identical to that of tooth enamel. Porcelain is also highly biocompatible; crowns made from metals like beryllium, chromium, and nickel have been known to cause allergic reactions.

A crowned tooth with a root canal will be significantly less sensitive to pressure or temperature. Not all crowned teeth need to have a root canal; crowns can solve several dental issues. Crowns can be used to repair a fractured tooth, repair a chipped tooth, support a dental bridge, or replace discolored teeth.

Porcelain crowns can vary in strength and longevity depending on what kind of crown it is. Porcelain is vulnerable to fractures or cracking. Because of this, porcelain crowns are not recommended for high-pressure points like rear teeth or molars. These crowns are ideal for use in the front teeth.

Procedure for installing a porcelain crown

Treatment for installing a porcelain crown can take two appointments and span over two to four weeks. Treatment will begin with a thorough dental exam to assess the condition of the affected tooth. X-ray imaging will be used to view your supporting bone structures. The tooth is cleaned and reshaped to fit the crown. Some teeth need to be built up to fit the crown. After the tooth is shaped, an impression of the tooth above the crown is made to ensure that the crown will properly fit your bite. Your impression will be sent to a dental lab to fabricate the crown.

The crown can take about two to three weeks to be ready. In the meantime, our Escondido dentist will place a temporary crown over the tooth. When you return to the office, the temporary crown is removed. Our dentist may use a numbing agent when fitting the crown. The tooth is cleaned, and the crown is cemented into place.
