Same-Day Dental Crowns
Dentist Escondido

A shiny, pearlescent porcelain dental crown that beautifully matches the other teeth hovers above a damaged tooth that has been shaved down to receive it. A crown can be used to restore your tooth to its normal shape, size, and function. If you have a tooth that is damaged or weakened due to impact or decay, a crown can add strength and structural integrity. It can also be used to cap a root canal treatment, or if you have a natural tooth that is badly shaped or discolored. Our Escondido, CA team that helps with crowns at Robert J. Malone DDS can repair and restore your damaged tooth, improving your appearance and enhancing your smile!

What Are Same-Day Dental Crowns Escondido CA?

Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC) crowns are a recent way of providing patients with quality dental crowns in just one visit. Normally, a crown can take up to three weeks to be created and fitted. However, CEREC crowns use computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) to enable our professionals to create the crowns at our office at Robert J. Malone DDS and fit them in just one visit.

How Same-Day Crowns Work: CEREC and Other Technologies

Creating a CEREC crown is an efficient process and is possible thanks to the powerful computers that our teams have available. First, the tooth is scanned with a wand, which is a handheld digital scanner. The resulting images are uploaded to a computer, which creates a 3D model of the surface of your tooth.

Using this 3D image, our in-office CAD/CAM fabrication machine collect the data and creates your new crown in about 15 minutes. When a precise impression is obtained, the data is sent to a computer where a machine creates the crown itself. The machine cuts an accurately shaped crown based on the data provided using a ceramic block. After the crown is cut, additional coloring is performed to ensure that it matches the surrounding teeth of the patient.

Our expert dentist will shape your damaged tooth into a tapered cylinder by carefully removing some of the tooth material. Your crown will be fitted onto this newly shaped form. The crown is test-fitted several times, and fine tuned for maximum comfort and a perfect fit. An adhesive is then used to cement the crown in place permanently. We will take an x-ray for your dental file, documenting your new restoration.

Although you may notice some initial temperature or pressure sensitivity, your tooth will be functional immediately upon completion of your treatment. You may resume normal bite pressure and chewing as soon as it is comfortable, usually after just a few days. The overall procedure only takes a little longer than a traditional dental exam, as opposed to waiting weeks for a crown.

Benefits of Choosing Same-Day Crowns

The first benefit of a CEREC crown is the turnaround time. Often, patients can get their CEREC crown on the same day as opposed to having to wait two to three weeks for a traditional crown. A ceramic crown is your best choice for maintaining a natural tooth appearance. The ceramic material, while not as durable as a metal alloy, still offers excellent strength and durability. If your tooth is in a visible location, CEREC technology offers such excellent color matching that your friends may never realize you have a crown. Because CEREC crowns lack a metal core, they look more natural than traditional crowns. CEREC crowns are also sturdy and strong, and they are less likely to suffer from abrasion than traditional crowns.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Same-Day Crowns?

If your older restoration is no longer repairable by replacing the existing material, or if an older filling has failed, your natural tooth may not tolerate further filling treatment. Rather than trying to preserve a badly weakened tooth, a crown may be a more sensible option. A CEREC crown can make a tooth stronger, and can also be an excellent cosmetic choice, as it will look much better than a tooth with extensive filling work.

Same-Day vs. Traditional Dental Crowns: What's the Difference?

Getting a traditional crown is a two-visit experience. The first visit starts with an impression or mold of your teeth, as a reference point. The fabrication of metal alloy crowns is a time consuming process, and must be done in a lab. With a CEREC crown, the entire treatment is performed on the same day. Using digital imaging and our own in-office CAD/CAM machining system, you'll be on your way in one day with a fully restored, functioning tooth. No need to wait two to three weeks for your crown to be fabricated, or the need to come back in for a second crown visit.

Are There Drawbacks to Same Day Crowns?

CEREC crown technology is used in dentist offices across the U.S. For many patients, CEREC crowns have worked out well. A crown created with CAD/CAM would be similar to a traditional crown using the same material, but the difference is that the patient obtains the crown sooner. However, crowns made of metal cannot be manufactured this way, including porcelain crowns, which are considered one of the best dental crowns. Furthermore, there are offices that have not yet adopted CEREC crowns which limits who has access to this service. It takes a great deal of time and resources to buy the equipment and to ensure that the staff handling the CEREC crowns are adequately qualified to use the equipment. Due to these reasons, many offices have not yet implemented the use of CEREC crowns.
