Dentistry For Kids![]() Children's teeth can often be more liable to decay and complications than adults, because they're still developing, so we want to make sure your child has excellent oral health. Visiting Us with Your ChildIt may surprise you to learn that your child's journey with us begins when their milk teeth first emerge. This first appointment is an opportunity for our dentist to investigate their gums and newly emerged teeth and ensure everything is developing as normal. They can also answer any questions you may have. Just like you, your child will have biyearly appointments to ensure their oral health is well maintained. When they are a little older, we may refer them to an orthodontist to help straighten their teeth. This is usually between the ages of 8-16, but it can be later. Home CareAt six months old, your child will develop their first tooth. You will need to care for their teeth until they are old enough to do so for themselves, and even then, they may need supervision. Brushing your child's teeth for two minutes a day, twice a day, is important even when they are toddlers. Using toothpaste for children is important as they need 1,000ppm of fluoride to protect their teeth. You should start teaching your kid how to floss at 12 years of age, and it is a good habit to start, as many adults still never floss. One of the hardest parts about your child's oral health can often be making sure they brush for a full two minutes. Making it a fun activity, by finding a song that's two minutes long, or setting an egg timer, can help encourage your child to brush for the entire duration. It is important, however, to make sure they do not run around while brushing their teeth. If you are unsure of the proper brushing and flossing techniques, you can always ask us for advice. Our dentists are understanding and can happily teach you. They can also give advice for your children's diet, which can have adverse effects on their teeth. The best thing you can do for your child's oral health is teaching them that maintaining their oral hygiene is fun and healthy. Adversity towards it can lead to complications later in their life. Bringing it into their routine will keep it in their routine. Robert J. Malone DDS wants the best for your child, and can help start them on their journey to a happy and healthy dental life. Any complications that they experience should be told to us as soon as possible, so we can resolve it quickly. Want to book an appointment for your child? Call us on (760) 546-5557 now. |
