Oral Cancer Screening![]() It can help reassure patients that there are no complications and can be used to start the necessary treatment. In most cases, the earlier oral cancer is detected, the easier it is to treat. Our dentist may advise you to have a screening if, you have never had one, it has been a while since your last one, or because of your dental/medical history Robert J. Malone DDS offers oral cancer screenings to anyone who is worried about developing it, and can help reduce concerns on the matter. What Happens During the Screening? An oral cancer screening is a remarkably simple procedure that can take less than two minutes. The screening involves a visual inspection of the oral cavity, cheeks, chin, nostrils, and lips. During the oral cavity inspection, we will use a light and mirror, to properly see the entire oral cavity. They will also use a tongue depressor when looking towards the back of the mouth and the top of the throat. The screening is also a physical inspection, in which they will touch parts of the patient’s face, to feel for any lumps, that could be unnoticeable from a purely visual inspection. Sometimes, patients will come in with a lump they have found, which the dentist can also inspect. CareLumps are often benign and go away after several weeks or months. It is always good to get them inspected by a professional if you are concerned, and to have an oral cancer screening if you have not had one in some time. If a lump is detected, then a biopsy and referral to a specialist will take place to investigate the matter further. You should not worry too much, as coming in for the oral cancer screening is the first step to getting treatment. We can help advise you on changes to your lifestyle that can help prevent oral cancer, such as reducing smoking and heavy drinking. HPV (human papillomavirus) is a virus that can be transmitted through oral sex. It has been shown to increase the chance of developing oral cancer, so maintaining a hygienic sexual practice is always advised.
